The strength of the Hurricane wings made an ideal gun platform to sling the massive Vickers ‘S’ 40 mm cannon from, thus equipped (plus two 0.303 inch machine guns) it became an extremely effective tank buster. No. 6 Squadron was formed in 1914 and in October that year it began operations led by Captain Hugh Dowding (later Lord Dowding.) In 1942 it was the first Squadron to operationally deploy the Hurricane lID and on the 26th October 1942 destroyed no fewer than 16 of Rommell’s tanks. Again on 22nd March 1943 the Squadrons Hurricane lID’s destroyed 32 tanks in just three hours. Post-war 6 Squadrons unofficial badge became the Flying Canopener to commemorate its tank busting days with Hurricane lID’s.
